Pilot action
Establishing a permanent dedicated site for separate waste collection in Sarafovo residential area in Burgas Municipality
The proposed pilot action aims to establish a permanent dedicated site for separate waste collection in the Sarafovo residential area of Burgas.
Currently, Burgas lacks a permanent well-organized facility where residents can bring and properly dispose of different types of household waste. As a result, bulky items, hazardous materials and reusable goods are often managed inefficiently, leading to environmental and urban management challenges.
The pilot action will aim at designing, equipping and entering into operation a structured, accessible and user-friendly collection point where citizens could permanently deliver separated waste streams, including recyclables (paper, plastics, metals and glass), bulky waste (furniture, appliances), hazardous household waste (paints, chemicals, batteries) and reusable items suitable for repair or reuse. The site would be developed with clear signage and designated collection zone; trained staff would ensure proper sorting and safe handling of materials.
The dedicated site for separate waste handling would be - even if inspired by Gijon - adapted to Burgas local context, taking into account the local urban layout, potential users´ behaviour and the existing waste management context and infrastructures.
The pilot would also include a communication and awareness campaign to encourage residents to participate in separate waste collection and use the new resource, while promoting an overall culture of reuse and recycling.
Data on usage rates, types of collected waste and user feedback will be monitored and evaluated to assess the effectiveness of the model.
Testing this type of dedicated site in the residential area of Sarafovo will make possible for the Municipality of Burgas to check the effectiveness of the solution and the feasibility of scaling it to other residential areas in the city, contributing to improved waste management, reduced environmental impact and increased resource efficiency at city level.
