Pilot action
Small-scale neighborhood composting sites in Söderhamn to increase composting of garden waste through increased accessibility
Many people do not sort or manage their garden waste correctly in Söderhamn. There is part of the population that neither composts at home nor takes their waste to the recycling station, but perhaps dumps it in the forest or burns it.
Also, the current Cycle Plan in force deals with several types of waste and fractions, but not with garden waste.
The pilot project aims at testing small-scale composting sites of garden waste in the area to see if they work to face this fact. The test will allow the Municipality to know if small scale neighborhood composting sites can be a solution - due to better accessibility and education; also, trying different methods of small scale composting; to produce in the process soil that could be used for circular cultivation; and to improve the Cycle Plan by including a dedicated section dealing with garden waste and how it should be handled.
Söderhamn Municipality will be responsible for building these compost sites and will count on local associations to foster these sites once they are in place. Apart from the local associations, an education association and the educational program in small-scale agriculture will be involved as stakeholders.
Two possible sites have been identified, one in a residential area adjacent to an urban farm, in the northern part of central Söderhamn. This will be a test site for small-scale composting, where material from their own operations, but also from local residents, can be composted. Hopefully, good soil can be produced that could eventually go back to the gardend of the residents of the area.
The village of Trönö (Söderhamns municipality), 18 km outside central Söderhamn, will also be a pilot site. The municipality will build a site with a simpler set-up here. This site will focus solely on local people, allowing them to collect their garden waste and make their own soil, instead of driving long distances with the waste to the recycling center, throwing it in the forest or burning it.
