Pilot action
Arctic Lakeland Digital Nomads Pilot
The proposed pilot will test a supported stay for selected digital nomads (DNs) in some municipalities in the Kainuu region for appr. one month during the Spring 2027, following a marketing campaign and a call for applications launched in the beginning of 2027. The number of participants will be max. 10 people (families, couples, and/or solo remote workers) and the criteria for selecting them will be defined in the beginning of the pilot.
Activities: additional study visits, video meetings with PP05, marketing campaign, call for applications, organizing coliving/coworking spaces and local transportation within the region for DNs selected. No grants nor gifts/gadgets will be paid/given directly to the selected DNs. All the necessary services will be contracted by PP09, responsible for the implementation of the pilot, complying with public procurement rules.
Similar remote work pilots were carried out earlier in the end of 2024 in Koillismaa region (Work and Stay, an ESF-funded project) and in Møre og Romsdal (PP05) (Geiranger, Norway), in winter 2025 and 2026 (Arctic Digital Nomads grant, co-funded by NORA). Kainuu representatives became familiar with both pilots through the EDIN project (study visits to Geiranger in 10/24 and to Kuusamo in 05/25).
In the proposed pilot action, 2-3 persons from Kainuu region will make one additional study visit to Geiranger in October 2026 to learn more in detail about the Arctic Digital Nomads Grant scheme, implemented successfully earlier there, ensuring that the pilot action forms part of the transfer of good practices learned within the EDIN project from one partner to another.
For this reason, PP05 is engaged as a donor. All additional travel costs related to such visit will be covered by the Kainuu representatives as part of the pilot implementation. In addition, a video meeting will be arranged between Kainuu and Geiranger to learn more about the Norwegian experiences in attracting and hosting digital nomads.
