Let’s read together: Language and integration support for migrants in Litija municipality
PP05 & PP04 will test the Finnish GP Let’s Read Together: Language and Integration Support for Migrants, owned by Finnish Federation of Graduate Women, contact organisation LP01.
The Let’s Read Together network addresses the challenges migrants face in integrating due to language barriers and social isolation. The practice provides low-threshold, accessible learning environments. It is implemented through 80 local groups across Finland, where trained volunteers offer free Finnish lessons. Sessions are often held in public libraries, community centers, or churches, and they include conversational skills, reading, and basic grammar. Most groups are for all genders. In South Ostrobothnia network operates in Seinäjoki where activities are organized together with the local parish and the city. A Finnish language club meets weekly at a local cafe. In Kauhajoki, sessions are held weekly at the city’s Culture house focusing on practical Finnish skills and supporting integration. Key stakeholders include NGOs, municipalities, volunteers, and migrants, who are the primary beneficiaries. Coordination is managed nationally by the Finnish Federation of Graduate Women, in collaboration with local partners. Partners (ie. municipalities) provide the facilities for the groups and the network is responsible for training and supporting the volunteers, teaching materials for the groups and the marketing. Volunteers run the groups with the support of the network and partners.
This GP will be adapted to the local context of the municipality of Litija, concretely in the city of Litija with the highest number of work-based immigrants, and will be implemented in close cooperation with the local stakeholder Library of Litija and volunteers acting as informal teachers of Slovene language. It will target work-based immigrants who work in Litija as primary beneficiaries. They are mostly men from third countries (India, Bangladesh etc.) but the events will be open to all interested migrants.
