Pilot action
MaaS-Integrated Digital Display System at Barrier-Free Stop: Enhancing Mobility, Accessibility and User Experience in Northern Saxony
The aim of the pilot action is to test how a modern, accessible, user-friendly passenger information system can support MaaS-enabled everyday mobility at a local public transport stop. It will assess whether regularly updated digital information improves orientation and comfort, especially for people with reduced mobility, visitors and occasional users.
As comparable display systems are uncommon in Northern Saxony, the pilot introduces an innovative approach and provides initial practical evidence on technical performance, usability, user acceptance.
The pilot will be implemented in Schkeuditz, in Northern Saxony. Aufbauwerk acts as the overall coordinator, the District Administration Office provides strategic and administrative support, the City of Schkeuditz is involved in on-site implementation.
The pilot builds on a planned barrier-free new bus stop on Leipziger Straße and adds a digital display and passenger information system as an experimental extension. Beyond standard stop information, the display will test the provision of real-time departure/arrival data, delays, disruptions and cancellations, route and ticketing guidance, nearby shared mobility options, walking and cycling connections, local amenities and service points and clear, accessibility-oriented navigation support.
While the stop itself is part of the regular infrastructure programme, the additional digital component could not be delivered within the standard investment scope.
The 12-month implementation period will cover planning, installation, commissioning, pilot operation and transnational exchange with the MaaSolutions partnership. The pilot results will help define the conditions for future maintenance and wider rollout. It will inform the policy instrument by providing evidence for technical standards, selection criteria for future stop upgrades and decisions on how digital passenger information should be integrated into Northern Saxony’s mobility planning and infrastructure modernization.
