Pilot action
Smart Adaptive Street Lighting System to boost energy efficient, safe and sustainable communities
A joint pilot action (JPA) has been co-designed between the LP, PP03 and PP09 who intends to leverage the benefits of smart adaptive lighting technology (SALT). An IoT network of sensors (i.e. dimmable LED bulbs and control units, air quality sensors) retrofitted to existing lampposts along a key city corridor/environmentally sensitive area (test area) will allow to adjust the street luminosity to real-time weather and traffic conditions.
The deployment of the SALT system promises significant energy savings, drastically reduced maintenance cycles, and a reduction in pollutant emissions. These improvements will contribute to making urban and peri-urban spaces more accessible, safe, and livable for residents and visitors alike. The success of the SALT system in the municipality of Coimbra provides a proven model that the RESONANCE JPA aims to replicate in Beinasco.
Additionally, PP09 plans to enhance the SALT system by integrating air quality sensors (CO2, NOx, PM) into the IoT sensor network. This integration will enable continuous monitoring of air quality levels in the test area. By gathering and analyzing this data, Beinasco will be able to implement data-driven policies aimed at climate change mitigation and urban sustainability. While comprehensive data collection on energy usage and AQ metrics will identify impacts, data-drivem policies aimed at reducing pollutant emissions, enhancing energy efficiency, and improving urban living conditions will be formulated.
This expanded pilot project will not only replicate the benefits observed in Coimbra but also push the envelope by incorporating environmental monitoring. The insights gained from air quality data will inform policy decisions, helping to create a healthier and more pleasant urban environment. Through this JPA, Beinasco aims to set a benchmark for other municipalities looking to adopt smart, adaptive technologies to enhance urban living conditions and address environmental challenges proactively.
